Chapter Nine

Addie sat in her kitchen stool and hyperventilated.

The reality of things crashed onto her. Antonia had sounded miserable on the phone. Whatever schemes her uncle had planned were working. What about the farm? What about the fair? She knew just how much work Antonia was putting into it all, and just how much she loved her home. And here she was, helping her uncle take her girlfriend’s home from her. Her girlfriend she had met to trick in the first place.

Addie was one of Coffey Corp.’s schemes.

Addie didn’t have anyone, so she called the first person that came to mind, no matter how annoyed and angry she would be.

“What is it?” Linda answered. “Are you calling to know how the meeting with the McNair pair went? Why don’t you call your uncle? It went perfectly, by the way.”

“Oh, did it?” Addie wheezed out.

There was a pause. “You sound strange.”

“Linda, what do I do?” Addie cried, clutching at her chest with a hand as if that would take some weight out of it. “It’s my fault it went perfectly! I’m—do you know what Antonia said to me? She said her brother would buy all the lies Coffey Corp. fed him, lies like we’re giving them so much money! We’re making them rich! Who would want to live in a stinky farm anyway! Those are all things Uncle Steve said to me!”

“Adelaide, what are you talking about?” Linda asked wearily; Addie knew that in real life, the woman was pinching the bridge of her nose.

“I’m the one who’s tricking her,” Addie said, tears sliding down her face. “I can’t do this anymore, I can’t handle it. I can’t do this to her! I have to tell Uncle Steve—“

“Wait, tell him what?” Linda interrupted.

“That I’m in love with her,” Addie admitted, closing her eyes. “That I can’t do this to her. She’s the woman I was telling you about.”

“You can’t do that,” Linda hissed to her. “Are you insane? First of all, I knew instantly that it was her, because you’re fucking transparent and an awful liar, Adelaide. Second of all, only do this if you want to literally shit on your future.”

Addie winced, curling up further. “I wouldn’t be ruining my future.”

“Do you know Steven Coffey?” Linda asked her. “There’s no way he’ll let you run his company if he learns you’re gay. Stop acting crazy. Fine, try to convince him not to buy the farm, you will fail but you can try, who am I to tell you that you can’t—but convince him in another way. Telling him don’t buy the farm because I love her wouldn’t work even if you didn’t have the gay thing to worry about, also. Are you fucking stupid?”

“I’m not stupid,” Addie snapped—but she knew it was true. A part of her rebelled: he’s my uncle, he loves me, wouldn’t he care? But the truth was too glaring for even her heart not to see.

She couldn’t tell him. She couldn’t push him away. He was all she had.
